Pontis

Marimba Solo

PONTIS (2007): BRIDGE for marimba solo commissioned by Peter Martin is the composer's first virtuosic work for the instrument. Set in three primary sections (AB A'B' A"B"), the tempo alternates between slow and fast at the same time using a sparse-dense alteration in orchestration. The first section begins purely with pentatonic pitch materials followed by accidentals in order to dilute the unique color of a pentatonic scale eventually moving toward chromatic scale.Lyricism is one of my favorite musical style in marimba music so the character of subjectivity and sensuality of expression is described in the slow section. On the other hand, the fast driving rhythms in the section demonstrates of an intense and tension outpouring enthusiastic emotion.

“Personally I have performed her solo marimba composition, Pontis, in a variety of locations in the United States in the past year. These include the Las Vegas New Music Festival, percussion festivals sponsored by the Percussive Arts Society in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Oklahoma, and several other universities in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Indiana. In all of these locations, Ms. Choi’s music has entranced and challenged the audience.” -Mark Ford (UNT faculty)
